7: THE DESIGN OF THE ESTATE.

7:1: The original design was to Parker-Morris standards of housing.

7:2:1: The houses where laid out using the Radburn design.

7:2:2: This was designed to restrict vehicular access with the safety of pedestrians in mind.

7:2:3: Pedestrians would be able to move about within the estate without having to cross major roads.

7:2:4: The properties originally had open plan style in that they where unfenced.

7:2:5: A range of property types from bedsits to five bed three story houses exist on the estate.

7:2:6: There is a relatively high percentage of single person accommodation.

7:3:1: There are slight differences in the design of the houses.

7:3:2: Some properties are partly timber clad.

7:3:3: Some properties are a wide design and some properties are of a narrow design.

7:3:4: Some properties have two toilets and some only have the one.

7:4: There are a number of grassed areas on the estate. These are generally liked. Possibly because they break up all grey colour of the properties.

7:5: See the map 1:1 in the appendix for the geographical position of the Fordyce Estate.

7:6: See appendix 2:1 to 2:6 for details of the background of Hemlington.
